Frequently
Asked Questions
What
causes a person to be homeless?
While
no one event usually causes homelessness many factors keep a
person homeless longer than necessary, some of these factors
include:
- Poverty
- Lack
of affordable housing
- Personal
crisis -- medical, disaster, eviction
- Physical
/mental illness or disability
- Substance
abuse
- Job
loss or decline in income
- Domestic
violence and abuse
- Unemployment
- No/poor
transition planning from institutions, i.e. hospitals, foster
care, prisons/jails, etc.
- Negative
economic environment
- Changes
and cuts in public assistance programs
- Abandonment/deterioration
of family
How
can I help to support your activities?
Of course
monetary donations allow us
to provide critical assistance to those in need, but we also
are in need of non-monetary gifts (see our current
wish list). Our volunteer
program provides a wonderful opportunity to get involved
with our organization and contribute to the health of our community.
I
have seen people panhandling for money so they could stay at
the Salvation Army, why is that?
We strive
our best to help men to stay at the Centre. We provide a free
bed and a meal until a client is able to see a worker at the
Ministry of Social Services. In most cases the Ministry of Social
Services provides enough assistance for the client to obtain
a job and later permanent accomodations. In extreme weather
conditions we do not turn away anyone and we provide a free
bed to anyone who is at risk of freezing. There are those that
do panhandle and contact other agencies looking for cash to
stay at the Centre but in the vast majority of times that isn't
needed and they can be referred to us and we will be able to
help them. Sadly some have panhandled and asked for cash in
our names in the past and have used it for other purposes. If
in doubt on what to do, feel free to give us a call.
Under
what circumstances is someone forbidden to stay at the Salvation
Army?
While
we try our best at helping out the most amount of people possible,
there are some people that we do not allow to reside or use
services at the Salvation Army. In the past some clients have
become extremely violent towards staff or other clients or have
endangered people who stay or work here in another way (drug
dealing, starting fires, or extensive willful damage to the
facility). In the vast majority of cases we will ban a client
for a finite period of time and work with them at finding other
options to stay. There are some clients however that because
of consistent danger towards others, are not allowed to come
back until those violence issues are dealt with.
Who
is eligible for your program?
We provide
emergency food and shelter to men in need. We provide them a
free bed and breakfast so that they can see Social Services
for funding or seek out employment. We ask that they are sober
and have identification. If a client is not sober, we refer
them to Larson
House which has an overnight shelter space for intoxicated
men.
