One
of our community programs is the Nutana
Collegiate & Community Breakfast Progra". Each
morning at 7:00 am volunteers roll into The Salvation Army
Community Centre to start the breakfast. The morning starts
with the frying of eggs and hash browns along with bacon and/or
sausages with toast. The team is usually ready to roll out
with the supplies in the Community Response Vehicle by 7:45
am. On arrival we can see that there are people already waiting
for breakfast.
The
program was started on January 7th 2002. We started with just
a few children, about 7 - 10 at the beginning, but by the
end of the first school year the numbers were up with anywhere
from 40 to as high as 100 people coming to the vehicle for
food on any given morning. We now averag 60 people per day
being fed by The Salvation Army's Community Response Vehicle.
This number consisted of street youth, the disadvantaged from
the neighborhood and the young people from the high school.
As a result of the breakfast program, student teacher relations
have greatly improved as the children now come to school early
for breakfast and are relating to the teachers standing there
while waiting for their meal. The student's marks and attendances
have greatly improved as a result of this program and in 2008
we expanded the program to also service City
Park Collegiate where we are seeing many of the same results
that we saw at Nutana Collegiate.
